Happy New Year
May every day in 2018 bring you wisdom, knowledge and success.
When the New Year rolls in, we’re inundated with advice and pressure to resolve to be our best selves ever.
If you want to create a change in your life, you can begin by clarifying your intention for doing so.
Whether you eschew personal resolutions or embrace them like an old friend, we see a lot of merit in making New Year’s resolutions, especially for our home business. However, we think of resolutions a little differently. Rather than setting unyielding goals that can be attained only with superhuman discipline (as most resolutions are), we prefer to set intentions for the year. These intentions can serve as a guiding compass for your efforts and you can evaluate your progress in small increments over time.
The new year is the perfect opportunity for a fresh start and some new year business planning. Regardless of whether you’re a small startup or an established firm, you should always be setting new goals and plans for your business to achieve. This allows you to stay on top of the competition, as well as helping your business evolve.
To help you with this, we’re sharing our top 6 steps for setting business goals, so that you can accomplish and exceed your business new year resolutions.
1. Be S.M.A.R.T
When you are setting your small business resolutions and goals, make sure that they’re S.M.A.R.T. This means that they should be:
S.M.A.R.T. goals allow you to see clearly where you want your business to be, how you’re going to get there, and when you should meet your objectives. When everyone in your product, service or opportunity is aware of your S.M.A.R.T. resolutions, you’ll find it easier to work together to achieve the end result and reap the benefits of meeting your goals.
2. Don’t play it safe
As bestselling author, Seth Godin once said, ‘If it scares you, it might be a good thing to try.’
Setting goals that are within our comfort zone won’t push us to try new things and take risks. However, doing the opposite can bring about a world of benefits.
In the new year, be sure to explore new avenues and opportunities, even if it’s a bit daunting at first. Taking risks is what being a business owner is all about, so take this in your stride and make the risks pay off.
Make a commitment this year to go big or go home!
3. Always keep rewards in mind
Regardless of whether you’re a solopreneur or you’re a part of a large organisation, it’s always important to reward yourself when you make a big achievement.
This could be anything from taking a small trip or hosting a party. No matter how big or small the gesture, keeping rewards in mind will keep you and your team motivated to achieve your goals and head for success.
4. Consult your team
If you work with a group of people, it’s crucial that you consult them when setting your business goals and intentions for 2018.
Particularly for any small business resolutions, you may want to set, your team can offer useful insight into whether your resolutions are appropriate for your business and whether they can be achieved in the outlined time frame.
Making sure you and your staff are aware of any changes that may arise in the new year, will prepare them for the future and make it easier to achieve your goals.
5. Head for change
Your business should always be changing and moving with the times, and this should reflect in your business goals. Change can be a frightening thing, however, when it’s change for the better, you won’t want to look back.
6. Invest in yourself
We are often so hard on ourselves by not investing in ourselves but look at it like this, everything that is worth your time is worth your investment to become the best you can be. We invest in all sorts of other things in our lives, Wifi, TV, learning how to drive, learning how to lose weight or going to the gym – ask yourself this very simple question this year – “How am I going to invest in myself to make my business successful?”
I very much look forward to connecting, guiding, inspiring and learning from each and everyone of you. I have big plans this year and you can join me on this journey that has been changing so many lives. I am excited to get started so I have designed an accountability Challenge starting in a couple of days. Make that commitment today!
